Mulberry paper (also known as washi) is a traditional Japanese paper made from the inner bark of the mulberry tree. The long, fine fibers are pounded, soaked, and laid into sheets — the result is a paper that's surprisingly tough for its lightness, with excellent light-diffusion properties.

With normal indoor use, the shade will hold its shape and color for many years. Avoid direct moisture, kitchen-grease environments, or sharp objects — paper does not recover from punctures or water marks. Dust gently with a soft brush; never wipe with a damp cloth.

The shade is hand-bonded using strips of mulberry paper and glue, following the traditional Gifu lantern technique. Minor glue traces along the edges where paper strips overlap or join the frame are part of the artisan process — every single lamp will have these marks because no two are folded identically.

This is not a defect or quality issue. If you would prefer a piece without any handcraft variations, please consider a machine-made lamp instead.

Single E26 or E27 medium screw bulb (LED recommended). E26 is the US/Canada standard, E27 is the EU/UK/Asia/Australia standard — physically interchangeable.

Because the shade is paper, we strongly recommend warm-white LED bulbs (2700K) at 5-9W maximum — LEDs run cool and won't heat the paper. Avoid incandescent or halogen bulbs over 40W, which generate enough heat to scorch or yellow the paper over time.

This lamp is plug-in — no hardwiring required. It ships with a 150 cm / 59″ cord ending in a standard wall plug, with an inline on/off switch on the cord. Simply screw in a bulb, plug it into any standard outlet, and switch it on.
